Named after the iconic Mt Iron overlooking Wanaka, this sub-brand reflects the rugged beauty and reliability of the region we call home. Whether you’re a chef looking for a razor-sharp kitchen tool, an adventurer in need of a reliable field blade, or simply someone who values well-crafted gear, Mt Iron knives deliver outstanding quality straight out of the box.
Each knife is forged with premium materials: carbon steel, or an authentic hand forged Damascus billet. Two full days goes into the forged welding of the billet before forming of the knife can begin. All knives are hand finished for balance, edge retention, and durability with no compromises — just functional, beautiful blades made by Rob who lives and breathes the craft.
Explore the Mt Iron range and find your next everyday essential or standout piece. At Wanaka Knife Making, we’re proud to offer knives that are ready for work, built to endure, and made to reflect the spirit of the land that inspires them.

I use a core of 01 Carbon Tool Steel, sandwiched by 15n20 high nickel and 1084 Carbon Steel always ensuring that the 01 remains at the core of the billet as the folds and forge welds are made. There is a minimum of three forge welds per billet, this limits the working of the steel in the forge, retaining the carbon within the steel. This number of forge welds also allows me to achieve between 600 and 900 layers of steel
The billet takes about 15 hours spread over three days before it is ready to normalise i.e. remove the stress and align the steel. I can now start forging the actual blade, which can take between one and two days. The blade is normalised again before Harding and Tempering. Then sanded, acid washed, has the handles fitted, sharpened and sanded again. Giving a final product that is unique and can never be duplicated.
Starting from $60
